Planning

It is best to use the word "tentative" on some syllabus items to provide an opportunity to be flexible in accomplishing the couse objectives.

The word tenative indicates that a holiday or an unforseen event may chnage the course lenght or even direction to accomplish the goal of the class.

Jessica,

thank-you so much!! I love the idea of this math rapid fire game and I can't wait to try it out today in class. We have an exam scheduled.

Any other ideas I'd love to hear them!!

Thank-you again,

Katrina

Hey Katrina,

I have taught medical algebra class as it was very fun. I utilized several games, but the one game that the students loved the most and learned from was a game I called rapid fire. I played this game before any major test and the students told me they went home and studied for the game (not the test, but to win this in class game :). I break the group into 2 random teams (more depending on the size of your class). One member from each team comes to the board and I give them a math problem to complete. The first one done with the right answer wins (with no help from the audience). This games is usually played for bonus points (5 bonus points on their next quiz for all team members).
**Note game has been a sucessful and fun learning experience when the class is a "close knit", friendly and copetitive class. I have played this game where the members of the teams were so "high strung" to win they would get mad at the members of their team that got the answers wrong. I suggest testing it out and if it works go for it?
Good Luck

Hi Katrina,
I would start with what I call "Concept Connections." This game takes a concept and then has students build connections to that concept based upon their own life experiences. I do this in groups and then we have "Share Time." I use Family Feud and Jeopardy as games to helps students see the value and application of key concepts.

I would like some suggestions as to how to create a fun and interesting projects and instructional style to keep the students interested in medical algebra?? I am a first time instructor with 15 years expereince in the hospital. I would love any and all ideas.

Hi Esther,
I use the work "optional" on some items. This means it will be optional with me if we cover the items listed or not based upon how the class flows. Sometimes when they see the list of optional items they ask how can we get to the list. My response is work hard and we will be able to move quicker to the items on the optional list.
