Planning and Preparation

Planning and preparation is the essential elements in successful teaching. Once you have the lesson planned and the preparation materials made all that is left to do is show up early for class and use PowerPoint Presentation or white board to present the material then have a hands-on project to re-enforce the concept taught.

Hi Aaisha,
Thank you for these comments on how to reduce some of the stress of teaching. By using the method you follow you have everything laid out and ready to go. You then can focus on greeting students and getting each class session off to a good start. This really sets the tone for quality instruction.

I find there is less stress when everything is prepared prior to class. I usually print off everything I will need for the course ahead of time i.e. outlines, powerpoint handouts, supplemental materials, homework assignments etc. I keep them filed in the order in which I plan to present the subject matter. Lectures, handouts, classroom activities, and homework to be passed out for each class session. Everything is organized where I can grab and go each day.

Without preparation I can not focus on day to day basis.

Planning and preparation also instill student confidence in their instructor. When the instructor is prepared, they are also confident and their students take notice.

I totally agree. I spend several hours planning each of my class lectures. I wish there was a way to reduce it-effectively.

Hi Mary Jane,
Right you are. It is such a great feeling to know you have everything ready to go and that you can enjoy teaching the content and interacting with the students rather than trying to keep a class going without preparation.
