Yes, you do need to set specific goals. If you don't know where you are going, how will you (or your students) know when you get there?

Agree. We may tend to think of Gs & Os as being for the students (and they are), but I think think they are almost more for the instructor. If you don't know your objectives, how do you know what to teach? As a new instructor, I am sometimes stumped when I try to develop a lesson plan - "What am I going to say today?" Looking at the objectives gets me started.

It is important to have clear goals and objectives for the course one is teaching to provide a learning environment similar to the setting in which the students will eventually placed their learning experience into use.

I am the new instructor for the Medical Office Administration (MOA), in this environment we are providing the students with hands on training in scheduling, charge entry, and payment posting from either the insurance companies or patient’s. We will complete a full circle process in claims processing, coding, medical terminology to enable the student to read and decipher a medical report. We will train them to use medical office management programs. In addition, they are train to use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Providing the students with clear goals and objectives provides the students a full picture of what they will gain and envision the end result.

Definitely, just remembering what teaching techniques were most effective when I was being instructed helps me use those tactics in my lessons.

I think it not only helps the instructor stay on task and focused but it helps the students as well. It also helps with the evaluation component.

It creates expectations for both the student and the instructor. It helps ease nerves if people are clear about what it expected of them

Clear objectives and goals puts everyone, student, instructor, and institution, on the same path. Most adult learners must know why they need to know the content..a sense of motivation. If there are clear goals and objectives, the students, as adult learners, know exactly what and why they are trying to achieve with the course. Setting up the course for success, in this manner, benefits all involved and promotes achievement of each students personal goals and objectives for attending school.

Clear goals and objectives for a course are important because they establish expectations. They communicate what students can expect from you as an instructor and from the course content. They also inform students about what is expected from them. Ultimately, the goal is to avoid misunderstandings at the end of the course.

Having clear goals and objectives for your course is important because it is important for the students to know where they are going and what they will be acomplishing. Without that it can be difficult for the students to take interest in the course.

It makes student success so much easier when the road is clear.

One of the strengths of any course needs to be clearly writing and analyzing goals and the objectives needed to develop a relevant course. A challenge will always be keeping on top of industry standards, trends and requirements.

I have a handout I give to my nursing sudents at the beginning of each new group. It outlines my personal expectations as well as the school and hospital rules. This way no student can say " I didn't know[I had to have a stethoscope]"

To set the tone for the class.

Agree 100%

It is important for the teacher and students to have a clear idea on what is to be accomplished during the module.

IF THE STUDENTS DETECT YOUR INSECURE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING IT DOES NOT GIVE THEM A GOOD MODEL FOR LEARNING.

Creating Clear goals allows the students to understand what will be learned, as well as what will be expected of them. This can ease course anxieties by dissapating uncertanties about what skill levels or prior knowledge will be required throughout the course.

having clear targets with a plan from them to reach the target also allows the students to use their mental focus on the course subject matter, rather than spending it on guestimating what the instructor is looking for.

So students know what to expect, when to expect it, and how to expect it.

Well written goals and objectives determine and help define the end results of a course. They help to alleviate certain anxieties and establish accountability on both the instructor and student.

Bethany, clear goals and objectives would certainly help to set student expectations. I think too that student's might even get excited taking the class if this were a special area of interest. For example, if the student was really excited about learning how to knit and this is the class that showed them how to knit and pearl, they would be very enthusiastic right from the beginning!
