A clear G & O allows the auidance to develop an expectation of what the lecture is suppose to impart. Gives them a change to gather whatever knowledge they have on the topic and become participative throught the session.

Having clear and understandable goals that can be reached in a timely manner are key for students who may only have limited access. Explaining the goals and objectives can help prepare the students for what is expected of them to learn.

Clear goals give students information about what they will learn during this class time. Whether the goals are long term or short term, students should be able to see what the end result of their learning will be.

Having a clear goal and objective in the beginning will give a clear mind and objective to how to finish your goals correct. They both work hand in hand one with out the other the direction in the student will be lost.

When teaching it is alway important to have a foundation. Goals and objective gives the instructor a guideline in which they can use to effectively teach their class. Its helps the instructor determine the best material and teaching style he/she will use. It also helps when determining the best way of testing and assessing the students. Therefore, this will helps the instructor give the students a clearer understanding of the course materials, and their expectations.

Hi Kristin,
Good points about instructional planning and why it is so important. There has to be structure and sequence if there is going to be targeted learning.

Hi Rhina,
Well said. Good quote, thanks for sharing it. This is why instructional planning is so important. The students have to see where they are going and why they are going that way.
Gary

If you don't know or don't have objectives then you don't have a lesson plan. If you teach off the cuff then you are obviously missing something :-)

Clear goals and objectives should be set for the course so that students know exactly what will be covered and what they will need to prepare for. By knowing in advance what will be expected of them to learn, students can focus on reaching those particular goals and objectives to get the most out of the course.

It really gives students a clear direction in terms of what is to be covered and sets clear outlines for the course.

It is particularly important I have found for those students who have attention deficit disorders. Ensuring that the class stays on course, with clear directives and direction halps to keep everyone engaged.

As the instructor, you need to know what has to be imparted to students in each class. Having clear expectations of students written down on a lesson plan helps you know what you have to do in the class to get students to that objective. You have to help them meet the expectations of the course.

A well-developed lesson plan with objectives and a step-by-step procedure for the class is critical for me. I refer to it each and every time I teach. It helps me be better prepared which provides a sense of stability and security for students; they know I know what I'm doing. Nothing is fly-by-night or off-the-cuff.

Developing clear goals and objectives verbally and written allow for the student to be clear on the course, goals of the course, and objectives what the student should be walking away with in the form of knowledge.

In Spanish there's a saying "El que no sabe lo que busca, no sabe lo que encuentra" " If you do not know what is it that you're looking for, you won't know what you'll find"
Meaning that if the student knows ahead what is that they're going to do, they could accomplished better

Hi Dale,
Like the word. With structure some many other things flow into the class sequence. By keeping the students informed you reduce their frustrations and give them expectations that are realistic.
Gary

Hi Dawn,

I agree with what you said. I also tell my students, "How do you know where you are going if you don't know where you've been." I think I stole that one from someone important. :) That is why I always do a quick review at the beginning of class to remind them of where we've been.

In a word...structure. Each day when I start my class, I do a brief review of what we did the last class period. I even go around the room and ask questions. Then, during my wrap up at the end of class, I give a brief outline of what we will be doing next class period. In my instructor reviews, many students comment on how they always know what to expect in my classes.

Hi William,
This has been my experience as well. This is why we instructors need to have clear goals and objectives laid out for our students and share them often throughout the course.
Gary

With my experience in teaching, I have found that students need very clear and simple goals and objectives. Also, those goals need to match class instruction and tasks so that students have a very clear idea of their direction.

Hi Doug,
Well said. Clear goals and objectives work for everyone. There is accountability on both sides when everyone knows what the outcomes are to be and how they will be measured.
Gary

Developing clear goals and objectives allow students to understand what is expected of them in eaach course, and how you as an instructor will guide them to that place. It allow both student and instructor to have a clear focus on what each expects to achieve during the course, which can prevent difficulties later during the class.
