Professional Presentation
Presenting yourself in a professional manner encourages respect from the students toward the instructor and toward the subject.
Students will for the most part try and emiulate their professors who has gained the students respect. it is therefore very important to maintain a professional appearance toward your students.
Also keep in mind this is a great time for these students to learn professionalism. In the classroom they can be tought what or how their actions are negitively affecting themselves. In the workplace, quite often you are not given this luxury.
I agree, Dana. If I were to come to class dressed the way the students dress, the students would look at me like one of the "pals". As we learned in the first module, that would destroy the student-teacher relationship.
Joanne,
So true. You are the measurement of the field for the students so you need to always be professional in your conduct and interactions.
Gary
when you present yourself in a professional manner you also are showing your students how they should present themselves so they get the same respect from others.
Q'iana,
Right you are in terms of professionalism. This is what is needed to illustrate the the expectations of the students in relation to career development.
Gary
Prefessionalism is the first experience most students will see before they enter into the workforce. The instructor is the first line of communication for that experience--if that instructor does not perform as expected, or show the example that is to be set--the reputation of the instructor, student, and/or college is on the line for future hires or site placements.
Sherry,
You created a very clear image of what a professional educator should not be. Thank you for sharing it with us. You are right on with your comments about needing to be the proper role model for the students.
Gary
Just imagine, as a new student walking into a classroom and the instructor is sitting at the desk talking on a cell phone using slang terms, chewing gum, and attired in a very provacative outfit...how would this encourage respect from new students? Part of an instructor's job is to be a role model for our students and the instructor described above is a far cry from being that.
This is so true. Respect goes a long way and when it is mutually established it is a great thing in instructing.
Students in the career college setting are especially in tune with how you appear and present yourself. They will quickly lose respect for you if you seem unprepared and unprofessional. If that happens, it's very difficult to gain back that respect.
Unfortunately, college instructors become the first example of a professional for many of my students. So its very important to uphold the standards that will be expected of them in the workplace.
Hi Dana,
Yes, it does. A professional attitude shows the students the value attached to both the field of study and the human aspects of the career area.
