When things dont go as planned to intial syllabus

When there are unexpected snow days, or times that student dont even show to class, planned lectures are often moved back. How should the instructor approach the situation?

I believe any syllbus would benefit from this addition. I teach a language class and when students are stuck on a particular skill, it is necessary to postpone the other activities. There is no reason to move foward if they aren't ready.

I concur. In working in a clinical environment that entails practice on live subjects, it is imperative that we learn to be flexible.

Amy,
Good point and an important one to make with students. There are so many factors that can change the course of a lesson, especially as you mention working with animals that students need to see that flexibility is a key component of learning.

There is a statement in each of my syllabi that says the course outline may be changed to accomodate special circumstances or learning opportunities. Since we work with animals ( vet tech) nothing is ever certain.

Jennifer,
Good strategy. You are targeting the content that is needed and able to move the class forward in spite of the change in plans.
Gary

I would do so with a mini lecture as that is the easiest and quickest way to focus just on the main points of the lecture that was missed without taking up an entire class period and the students still get the material they need and can further study the material by reading at home.
