Deadlines

With all the planning and preparation I do to ensure that students have the necessary requirements for externship? How do I make them understand the improtance to meeting required deadlines and getting them met?

Kiona,
Be fair, be consistent and be firm. These factors will greatly reduce your frustration with students and reduce their complaints because they know you are going to maintain the standards of the course and if they don't meet the standards of the course there will be consequences.

Dr. Gary Meers

With my students, I've heard it all when it comes to not turning something in on time. So what I do is I inform them in the syllabus and in class that I will NOT accept late assignments from them unless it is a true life or limb emergency. Most everyone tries their best to communicate with me. Those that don't see the results. I hate to do it, but these particular students seem to only work with very definitive rules.

well if they are employeed ask if they expect their check on time and what they would do if it was not.

I too find it difficult to relate the importance of deadlines, especially when it couples with attendance. If a student is absent and we do an in-class project should the person absent be allowed to make up those points.

Buy telling that that everything in this WORLD evolves around money and time is money not meeting deadlines means possible termination of employment.

Pamela,
By setting the tone for the course in such a way that they realize the consequences of meeting and not meeting those deadlines. You are the learning leader so remind them of upcoming deadlines and reinforce that these deadlines mirror what will be expected of them when they enter the work world. Hold to those deadlines. You will find that after one or two experiences with not receiving points for projects completed they will start to come around.
