Syllabus

Should a student be given a syllabus in their native language? with a multicultural society many students English is their second language. They are citizens and should be given equal opportunities. Let me know what you think.
Paulette

I think this is a great response. We are educating students to enter a predominately English business community and the students should be primarily concerned with that.

S. Craig

Only if I'm able to understand the language its translated to.

Irina,
The key is to prepare students to be successful in the language of the career. If that doesn't happen then the students are going to be greatly limited as to where they can work and use the knowledge and skills they have acquired. Good point.

Despite being a multicultural society, formal education is always performed in the official language. This is similar to workforce environment, where it is prohibited to communicate in any other language to preserve organizational transparancy. Moreover, it is not possible to "please" everybody due to great variety of languages.

I do think if you are preparing the student in a work force that is primarily English along with the text and their classmates, the syllabus should also be in English. Because if they cannot understand the syllabus how are they going to understand the class or instruction, unless you can speak their language.

Paulette,
We provide out syllabi in English only as we are educating the students to enter the work world where that is the language of the work place. We have services for ELL students to help them be successful in class.
