Learning Environment
Whats the best way to establish a positive learning environment?
Linda,
I agree with you and I try to run my classes this way. Learning takes hard work and effort but can be enjoyable and rewarding to all those involved. Plus, a good laugh really helps clear the mind and focus students.

I feel it is so important to have great social interaction with your students. They should feel that you are approachable and feel comfortable with you. There is nothing wrong with a good balance of humor, compassion and learning all mixed togehter. You have to be careful as a teacher not to let this get out of hand and keep control at all times. I beleive that a comfortable learning environment is crucial to really obsorbing the information.
Maria,
This is a very important technique to employ. It really helps to get the students settled into the course and ready for what is going to happen next in the class.

I likee to meet my student at the door, welcoming them back and then asking them how they are doing. We talk a little bit about the day and explain whats going to be happening the rest of the day.
Orvileta,
This simple social interaction is very important for setting the tone for the upcoming class. Spending informal time with students prior to the opening of class helps them get settled in and ready for class.

Establishing a positive learning environment can be done by greeting the students as they enter the room, and engaging in conversations about content etc. It can also be done by developing an environment that is free of judgement and rich in discussion about the course topics.
Rich,
Be organized and professional. Start the class on time, be clear about the day's goals and then use a class starter that engages the students. It can be a thought provoking question or discussion to get them thinking. This type of opening gets them to thinking about the course and reduces outside distractions.
