I agree, we should always expect the unexpected.
Prepare outline of goals to be met in class and assignements and materials ahead of time that will help reach these goals.
No matter how much we prepare, we should always expect the unexpected, therefore I love using contingency plans. Contingency plans allow me to always be prepared.

In the biggest sense we can't because of the human factor that each student brings to the class. What we can do is plan and organize each learning opportunity in such a way that we are offering content and application in a way that sets the stage for enhanced learning. By doing so we will have provided our students with our best professional efforts as instructors.
