Inclement Weather and Syllabi

Due to recent bad weather campus was closed and I had to make changes to the syllabus. As soon as class resumed I handed out a revised syllabus that detailed changes to quiz dates, etc. However, some of the students were confused about the dates for the quizzes, despite the fact that it was clearly laid out on the revised syllabus. How can I make this more clear to the students?

Diane,
Good way to connect with your students and show them that you are there for them. This sets a positive tone for the upcoming class sessions.

On the first day of class, I make sure I have all student's cell phone numbers, as well as they have mine. If there is anything that comes up, I can text or call students ahead of time so they, themselves, don't make the trip.
Then, as I hand them the new due dates, we discuss them openly in class.

Cynthia,
Hope you are dug out soon and that none of your students got stranded anywhere. Good plan on keeping them notified as to the status of their class and attendance.

Gary,

This is a great idea! Thanks so much. We just had a major blizzard this weekend and some of my students have emailed me to tell me that they still haven't had their streets plowed or they still can't get their cars dug out from all the snow. I'm aware that I will have to make some changes. Originally, I was just going to make an announcement in class, but I think doing a brightly-colored hand-out will be better. I will also post it to the campus portal for them so even if they lose the hand-out it will still be readily available.

Send emails to all students if you have access to their addresses.

Nora,
What I do with something like this is to put together a one page handout with the new due and/or quiz dates. I put the handout on bright blue/pink/green/something that will attract their attention color. I put the print in large letters, bold type, etc.. I hand them out and we spend a few minutes reviewing the dates one more time. I have a little fun with this in terms of the handout, because I put some clip art on the page as well. The result is that the get the new dates and I don't have problems with them being confused.
