Planning and preparation

Taking the time to organize and prepare the material to be covered simplifies the process for the instructor and guarantees a better result on the part of the students.

Jerry,
Thank you for sharing this strategy with us. I like this check list approach because it is a graphic reminder of how the course is progressing.

One of the key preparation elements I use in my class is to list my daily objectives on the whiteboard , and I follow them to the t, by doing this my students are able to follow along easly, understand what we are trying to accomplish and at the end of class we have a sense of where we need to go the next day.

Donna,
Good advice to share with other instructors. Using a check list and sharing upcoming topics really help to keep students informed and feeling a part of the class.

This is a good reminder for those of us who are adjuncts. If we practice this in our career work days it should come as second nature. I believe in check-lists for everything in my life: Home, work, Leisure. It might be a decent idea, prior to class, to post today's class outline and any "assignments" they will have to bring to next class. If possible, give a hand out of the outline for "next" class, too.

Grace,
Plus it helps to get everyone on the same page in getting the course started and keeps students on pace throughout the duration of the session.

I agree. It allows you to set expectations for the student, therefore most students will respond favorably.

Being prepared sets the overall tone for the class. On time, opening statements, observations, lecture, then student participation always works best for me. Following my checklist/class outline guarantees good results at the end.
