Selecting textbooks
I understand that as an instructor I can request additional materials like other books. I want to know if the instructor has a deep preferences for one additional book but not for the referred book given by the school. Is it ok to lecture the class based on the additional book content?
Sharon,
Good question and one that needs to be clarified by your college. If you use an article and give credit for the source then you are fine but to use a copy of a chapter from a textbook puts you in conflict with copyright laws.

One of the issues that I find with this problem is one of the legality of using a book that has not been adopted in my class. What are the legal pitfalls of making handouts from a book that I only have a desk copy of?
Jean,
The first part of my response will deal with your school's policy. Make sure to find out if they will let you use additional resources. Rather than lecture out of another book which might get confusing for students I would create supplemental handouts for the students. The source of the content can come from the other textbook. This way you are providing clear and concise information that goes along with the official textbook for the course.
