Planning and preparation
Making sure that I am always prepared having the material ready before class starts. Making sure all the media works. Preparing by rehearsing what I will be talking about with the students.
Shirley,
Preparedness is essential. A class session that is not prepared for is doomed from the very beginning. You are right about the great feeling it is to know you are prepared and ready to go when the class starts.

Yes, the students can tell when an instructor is not prepared. Sometimes this lack of preparedness can interrupt the manner in which the information exposed is received. Often times a lack of preparedness will lead to a poor presentation or confusing lecture.
I like the way you feel when you are prepared for class. It seems as if the class time flows extremely well. And the cycle of communication is operating at its peak.
Ivan,
My personality is that I need to prepare, arrive at class early, and get settled in. When I do this I am confident of the material I am going to cover and know that I can conduct the class as it needs to be. This reduces my nerves and need for excessive amounts of Tums.

Being prepared makes the life of an instructor easier. Lectures and all other presentations for the class need to flow smoothly. Believe it or not, students can tell when you are not prepared.
Adina,
Being prepared this way is always such a relief because I get to chat with the students and enjoy my time with them as class gets ready to start rather than having to run around trying to get everything organized and working at the last minute.
