I agree that a student's name should be pronounced correctly. This shows the student that you respect them as an individual and its a foundation for a personal rapport. In addition, should the instructor have difficulty in pronouncing a student's name attempt to secure a different name from the student or ask permission from the student if you can shorten their name so it's amicable for both student and instructor.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have had many students with challenging names. I alwyas make it a point to learn it (often writing the pheonetic spelling of his/her name in my grade book). Often, the student will offer a shortened version of their name, or even a nick-name in lieu of their full, hard-to-pronounce name. I always opt for the later. Unless the student requests that I refer to them by a second name, I find that it shows respect and caring to take the time and learn their name. It shows that you can be personable and approachable. I have built great report with students which I have done this with. It's the equivilent of giving someone a smile. They always return the effort!
