Classromm time
Make sure to use your classroom time efficiently
Sometimes I enjoy the challenge of trying to tie an off subject comment into the course that is being lectured on.
Antonio,
This is a challenge but as you say with some practice you will get the pace and flow going to where you will be able to keep the class moving forward just as you want it to.

I also struggle with this. I tend to sometimes start covering things that are in my next lecture or so because of a question that was asked. IT does waste sometime and then sometimes i will have extra time in my next class because i covered something already at the wrong time. Its just something I have to work on.
Samiya,
One approach I use is the three question rule. I will let a student ask a question and we have a discussion about it. If that question generates additional questions I limit the questions and responses to three. This way I can simply say "remember the three question rule so it is back to the topic" and the students then reset their brains to focus on the topic. The reason for the three questions is that I have found that with around three questions we have discussed the topic and have not strayed too far from the original topic. If I feel I have cut off discussion I will save some time at the end of class to bring the class back to the topic over which the questions were being asked and we will have a discussion over the questions. Since it is at the end of the class when time for class to be done comes around the students stop the discussion and we conclude class.

I would love to know how you go about doing this. Because so many times during my lecture a student asks a questions and one things leads to another and I find myself having to get the class back on track.
Jared,
What are your strategies for doing this?
