Classroom Setup
I teach at a design school where pc and mac are utilized. It is necessary to get to class early and make sure the projector, audio and computer are functioning prior to class start. Even if everything was working properly the week before, it does not mean it will be working the following. I always get to class early to make sure everything is functioning and call IT if necessary.
I heavily agree with your statement along with all the "props" your going to need to teach the lesson plan for the day. I am an electrical instructor so it is very important to have a visual demonstration of what I am talking about that day. For example if I am talking about GFCI's I'm going to make sure that I have enough devices on hand for my students to hold, feel, and touch as I am going over the different parts.
Jay,
Being there early is important I believe because it gives you a chance to check everything out and get settled into the environment. Your plan gives you time to chat with students as they come in and this promotes the development of rapport with them.

For me, classroom setup includes arriving early to insure there are sufficient seats and desks since these are often borrowed for meetings elsewhere. Also, to make sure the power point projector is working. Personally, I also take the time to write an outline on the board so that the students have an idea of the specifics I will speak about as soon as they arrive.
Class setup is important to ensure the class can see the overhead, power point and you.
Nora,
I am with you on this. I have to get to class early so I can get settled in and get a "read" on the mood of the class. It helps my mental preparation for class as well as gives me the opportunity to chat with students a few minutes and answer any questions they have on an individual basis.

Always a plus to arrive early. Sometimes I find myself addresing student issues prior to class that assists in the class flowing more smoothly as well. I found if I walk in the classroom rushing then everything and everyone seems out of wack. But arriving early and prepared makes for as calming manner and a better outcome.
The classroom must be ready for the students before they arrive for you to start off with interest. I try to have all my necessary equipment ready and exciting from the minute they walk in. I also believe in teamwork getting them to help prep even the day before for their next day activities.
Duffy,
Good point because what appears to be a small item in the life of a student can quickly become a major obstacle if not noted and changed. A clean crisp supportive environment goes a long way in setting the stage for student engagement.

agreed, it is also necessary to make sure the non-tech equipment is in proper working order as well: clean tables, an appropriate amount of space between rows of desks and lights in working order. it makes a difference to the students when the classroom is a comfortable environment from the moment they set foot in the door.
Melinda,
I do the same thing because between the last time I taught in my classroom and the upcoming class there has been many different instructors and classes in there so I never know if the IT equipment will work or not. So by arriving early I can get everything going and set my mind at ease that I am prepared and ready to teach. The peace of mind is worth the few extra minutes of getting there early so I can really appreciate your comments.
