connecting with your class

your presentation is EVERYTHING!!

Preparations is essential from DAY ONE! If you do not seem prepared on this critical first day, you lose a lot of credibility and respect from the students. The key is really understanding and knowing the content!

I INCLUDE MANY VISUAL AIDS AND HANDOUTS WHICH I FEEL WILL BE OF INTEREST TO THE STUDENTS AND TO THE TOPIC. I ALSO GIVE REAL EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS TO HELP THE STUDENTS RETAIN/UNDERSTAND INFO. WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF HUMOR IN THE CLASS!

Power Point presentations can be good if you:
1. don't read from the slides
2. don't have loads of text and small type on the slide
3. let students know that after a few slides you will be asking questions pertaining to what was on those slides, so they should take notes.
4. if students sit there and not participate during the presentation they will certainly "die" and you will definitely lose them, so keep them engaged at all times.

Hey Paul I agree with you on this 100 percent...being able to connect with the class is everything! I was able to do this by showing the students that I was once in their shoes and also it help when I told them more about my experiences in my career.

Danielle,
What are some ways that you keep your students engaged during your presentations? Thanks for you input on this.

keeping students attention by having a postive exciting presentation

Bruce,
This is a comfortable and interactive way to share content with your students. I know your students are going to enjoy having the opportunity to study with and learn from you.

My goal is to be extemporaneous with my presentation, memorizing enough of the content that I can deliver it as a conversation. I like to incorporate relevant video clips and share real-world examples that apply to the presentation and asking students to provide feedback from their own experiences or thoughts so that they 'get' the connection and relevancy of the presentation to their professional endeavors

Getting the students attention and breaking the ice the first class, has always been an affecting way in my teaching experience.

David,
The more connections like this you can make the better. By connecting the content to application you increase the relevance factor along with increasing the value of the course to the students since they can see how the course is helping them to move closer to their career goals.

I find do class participation and demostrations help with connecting with the classes I teach. I always want to make learning fun so I come up with new and creative ways to do just that.

Travis,
Students like variety and change of pace in their instructional delivery so the more you can do this the better. Since you are aware of how your students prefer to take in content you have an understanding of how you can offer them instruction that they will value and understand.

I try to engage them and apple active learning strategies. I really shy away from "death by power point" classes because I lose them very quickly that way.

PAUL,
All good ways to get students engaged in the learning process and excited about what you are sharing in class that day.

one thing is you must be bursting with positive energy with your presentation.I like to try to think what questions the students would ask?I also think if the instructor moves around the class i have their eye attention.

Visual aids that have shock value grab the attention of the class. Your enthusiasm to the visual presentation keeps them engaged.

PAUL,
What are some ways you go about preparing so your presentation is EVERYTHING? Your input on this is appreciated.
