BEING PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING

I find that when meeting a class for the first time the most important thing I can do to create a first impression is be utterly passionate about what you are doing... this I have always found breaks the ice and motivates the students

Jacqueline,
Passion and enthusiasm both go a long way in getting students engaged in the course and excited about what they are going to learn. We need to bring both each time we step into a classroom or lab.

Being passionate and loving what you do is very important. If that is not communicated to the class then the students may have a hard understanding what they are learning. I am a Massage Therapist and I make sure my students understand the job they will have after school is over. I portray my joy, passion and love during every class and it makes them want to learn more every day.

Francine,

I also believe passion can be demonstrated to the students with the instructor being a role model. Gaining knowledge never ends, and as the instructor expands his or her accomplishments through research, experimentation and on going exploration, all he newly found successes increase passion. The students can view this journey and share in the excitement.

Hi Trefor,
I believe being passionate about your subject is so important. Our students will become more engaged in the subject matter when they see the glimmer in their teacher's eye and a better understanding of what can be acheived when someone loves what they do.

The subject that I teach happens to be something that I am very passionate about and is one of my favorite things to do. This would be auto racing and engine building.By showing your students what can be accomplished in this field, you can't help but be passionate about it!This is one of the most exciting sports on the planet and to be able to become good at it and recognized for your efforts, is one of the greatest things that can happen to a person!

I try to give examples of why I am passionate using life and work experiences. For example I tell my students how my chosen field has satisfied my cureosity, brought satisfaction, and enriched my life.

I always loved my job,I really enjoy teaching. It is very easy for me be passionate. If you are not passionate about what you do or who you are around you might need some soul searching.

I cannot agree more I am a instructor for the diesel portion of ford fact and many students when they start my class have little knowledge of diesel and do not see a reason to learn them after phase end many have gained a respect and some even wish to work on them so even if the subject matter is not what they really wanted to learn getting them excited about the material can make all the difference

Hi Marco,
One of the ways is to take an area of your field that you really enjoy and talk about it. You will find yourself getting excited about explaining it to your students. Now take that excitement and transfer it to other areas of the field. Look for innovative ways of presenting materials. When one of these new ways really works for students and they have "ah-ha" moments then you will find that you will be even more passionate about the content.
Also, you need to do a inward check on your attitude concerning teaching. If you don't enjoy your students and your content then maybe teaching is not the profession for you. Many new instructors find that they are not suited to being teachers after they have been at it a while.
Be creative and work hard at establishing rapport with your students and you will find that you will increase your passion for your field.
Gary

What are some of the things you recommend for a new instructor for being more passionate?

Hi Trefor,
You are right on target with your comments. If you are passionate and care it will be reflected to your students and in your teaching.
