Student Introductions

Has anyone else ever tried this?:
After a student has finished speaking about him/herself, I have each student introduce another student (randomly chosen by me). It's a slightly different spin on the intros and gives the students a chance to say something about a student they don't normally associate with.

I have students introduce themselves as it breaks the tension in class.

Sounds geed Tom,
This can also help the instructor in learning names as well. Those extra few seconds and added information can speed up the name learning process.

That sounds like the name game we play. the students have to say their name and give a word that discribes your personality that starts with the same letter of you name Example: My name is Jackie and I am Joyfull. The next student has to do the same, but also repeat what the person or person that went before the said.

Because we are an automitive school, along with introducing themselves I have them tell me their favorite car. It helps break the ice becuase it is a subject that they are all interested in.

In our school, we are in a three week long course lock-step and except for the first course, (where they first meet) everyone in the class knows each other. We experience cohort groups every three weeks. Our best practices is for the student to stand when their name is called during roll call. The instructor can then inspect the student for any professionalism issues, ie; uniforms, safety glasses, ID badge, and hair and jewelry problems. It is a good ice breaker that the instructor asks the student where they are from, what brings them into this field, what their goals are etc.
Cheers,
Tom

I have not, but it sounds useful. This will make it easier to remember their peer.

Hi Russell,
The key point for any activity is to control the time as the instructor that way an activity does not take too much instructional time.
Gary

sounds like a great way to break the ice but it could possibly take up to much time

Hi Timothy,
This form of class introduction works well with smaller to medium size classes(5-20)due to the time it takes to have everyone share the name and something about that other person. You are right about having them talk and get to know others in the class a good tool to use as an ice breaker.
Gary

That would not work in my class regarding students saying something about another student they don't normally associate with will not work. But, my students don't have a problem telling you the pro's and con's about the school.
