Meeting
In meeting the class for the first time, it's important for the instructor to set the stage that portrays respect among students and the instructor.
Students seem to look and actmore relaxed after a meet and greet session, that always seems to break the ice.
Remember the students start over each time they have a "first day of class" so the experience should not be just another class day. Be new, be fresh, and be excited to be there and your students will want to hear your next word.
I agree that it's a fine line sometimes between mean and firm. However, it's important for teachers to remember that this is not a popularity contest. It is far better to have your students' respect than their validation that you are the "cool" teacher. The teachers I've admired the most were not necessarily the "nicest" ones.
Hi Renee,
The key point is the one you mentioned in your last sentence. Make the first day interesting and informative that will make the students want to come back.
Gary
I find that some instructors come accross as mean on the first day.
I think that you can state the rules without everyone thinking you are a Witch(B).
Be firm, give all of the rules, and get the respect without being mean. Try and make the first day interesting and informative.
that is correct, letting the students know what to expect will help the instructor through the whole course.
true. give them all the information of what is expected of them during the term you are teaching.
