Syllabus handout

Our institution encourages us to post our syllabus and not hand them out the first class. This is not a bad thing but it does not follow the CEE template that was just highlighted in test three.

A syllabus hand out with the course calender is included with each session.

Hello Joseph.

How do you post your syllabus? Does your institution have a "student portal" that they can access and review the course syllabus?

Hi Cristina,
The syllabus as you mentioned is so important since it forms the basis of communication for expectations and outcomes for the entire course phase. It takes away misunderstandings to a major extent. Never completely because as we all know students have a hard time accepting that they have missed an assignment or that a test was coming up and they were never notified, even though the syllabus has everything listed, announcements were made in class and written on the board. It is times like these that make teaching interesting.

I think handing out a syllabus is crucial to the student. I know when I was in college, it was the syllabus that kept you updated on class activities, homework, projects, etc. I also have had students who do not have access to a computer. Handing out a syllabus also makes certain a student knows what they are expected to accomplish in the class.

Although this may not be a bad thing in your institution, however, I have had experiences where some students do not have access to computers, unless they use the schools library. I beleive that if it is a course that students must attend lecture than I prefer issuing them a syllabus personally, and having them sign the required expectations to alleviate any issues later.
