Does anyone else feel the butterflies on the first day? I guess when we don't feel anxious about meeting that new class we should examine ourselves and renew our committment as instructors. RAB
Mr. Brown, I still have butterflies, and my mouth still gets dry, but i still enjoy every new class. Some more than others. We have to take the good with the bad. You can use these butterflies to our advances, to show we are still excited about teaching, and enjoying meeting new students. Lets all make it FUN. :)
Jitters, butterflies yes this is to be expected as you are getting ready to meet a number of students that you do not know and how are you going to be accepted, what is the attitude of your new class, are they motavited or not,are they quite or loud;this is the experiance of any instructor on the first day of class.JITTERS up.
Jitters? Butterflies? Nervous perspiration? Absolutely!! It is what lets us, as instructors know, that we are human, and that we care about how we're going to deliver the material, and how the students are going to receive and accept it.
When the jitters don't happen, it's time to reevaluate your perspectives.

I watch the clock all night before the start of a new class. I wake up wondering what type of students I will get. Will they get along. Will I be able to reach all of them. Without the jitters
I really don't thing I would be successful. The
rush of a new class and the sigh of relief at the end of that first day are part of the appeal of teaching. GET EXCITED!
Yes. Even when I feel confident in the course or subject, I will still get Butterflies. I've been instructing for 3 and 1/2 years and our students change courses every three weeks. I've seen a thousand faces but still I get nervous. Keith
Hi Maria,
They won't and that is ok. It just shows that you still are excited about starting a new class and seeing what your students will be like for the next course. It is what makes teaching so much fun and exciting, plus it is never dull.
Gary
I have been teaching for a decade now and until now every time I have a new class, I still have the jitters.
I figuring this will not go away anytime soon.
I have butterflies at the opening of every new class. if i didn't have this it would be time to quite.
Mr. Brown,
I have been teaching for over 18 years and to this day every Sunday before the first Monday of a course I usually get the worst night of sleep ever. I guess it just comes with the territory and I have learned to cope with it.
Nick
Absolutely! If you are not feeling a little nervous then something is wrong. Having taught for a few years it makes the first day jitters less but they are still there. I have learned to turn the anxious feelings to good use. It helps me be more animated and sharp for that first day. After the 'newness' wears off I miss it.
