Starting up a new group
The first day of a class is probably the most important. After a breif "getting acquainted session" I very carefully explain the reasons for achieving competence in each specific class exersize. I explain each project in general detail and explain what is required to be successful in each task.
Hi James,
I take a similar approach to the first day of class. I find that by explaining every assignment the students will know what to expect. By understanding the workload that is expected from the course they will be able to plan and manage the demands of my course and the demands of their other courses.
I agree! The first day is very important to inform students of your expectations and what they will expect from you. I think that you gain their respect.
After getting aquainted on the first day I think telling the students what is expected from them and how by doing the right thing will make their time in school easier and more productive in class and in the future should be covered on the first day.
i always like to introduce myself and give my backgrown, ilet them introduce themselves and wewe their from, then i give out the syllabus and explaine what the class is about.
The first day it is very important to lay down the law. let everyone know what is to be expected an far as rules go and what they can expect to get out of the class that will help them with there future .
Hi James,
This also gives the students a sense about how the course is going to go and lets them get settled in. The students need to know the expectations and requirements right from the beginning plus develop an understanding of how you are going to conduct the class.
