The Beginning Usually Determines the End
I found this detailed breakdown of best practices for meeting the class for the first time very helpful. I have done a lot of this before, but maybe not in the order listed. This information is important because this well organized system on the first day allows the instructor to "set expectations" for the entire course. A lot of times the way we begin a course or work project is the way we end up. The end result is highly affected by how we "begin" a journey. I will definitely use this information to enhance how I conduct my first class for a course in the future.

Hi Debi,
I like your total approach in developing the skills of your students. The skill specific content has to be learned but the "soft skills" are important as well. The removal of "Hey" from the language is a good start. Showing respect will develop respect and give your students a leg up when they are interviewing for positions. Competition is keen in today's market so they need to have the ability to separate themselves from the other candidates with their social skills.

I hope I can use some of the ideas about how I introduce myself. Maybe I can break it down into personal, professional and instructional and talk about these at different times. Students are usually very curious about an Instructor especially if they look to this person as an example of what they can become in their new career. Giving some ideas of acceptable behavior in the workplace that can be carried over into the classroom may give them some focus beyond the class experience itself.
I know I discourage the use of the word "Hey". I would never use that word to address my Supervisors and Managers so likewise we can respect everyone else to not use it with our Peers.
This was a good class segment. It gave me some new ideas and reinforced that some items I already include in my first class are being done in a positive way.

I like getting to know a little bit about my students. I feel that establishing rapport and projecting a professional yet caring attitude sets a positive tone. I usually check in with my students each session to make them feel comfortable, validated, and motivated. I believe that the teacher-student relationship can enhance the capacity of the student to reach for his/her potential.
Hi Holly,
Sequencing of class order is very helpful for students but the sequence needs to be yours. The list is only meant to be a suggestion of ideas that you can use. Create a list that works for you and your students.

I like the sequencing ideas as well, but thought the list was a little too rigid. I'm sure if I were to take attendance before passing out the course syllabus, the class isn't going to be ruined :) But there's value in making these lists so students get an organized overview of what's expected for the course.
