Important

I don't think it is possible to underestimate how important it is to be prepared in advance. In addition anything you can do to emphasize the expectations and put students at ease is going to be helpful.

Sometimes it can feel like overkill. However, you almost can't over communicate.

Hi Thomas,
Good point. The key is to get the class rolling and introductions and an overview of the course helps that along. Plus, the students can take in only so much information before they start to get overload. A slower pace will help them to process the course requirements, expectations and polices at a much higher level.

The suggestion in this section to take your time--even two days--to communicate all the expectations and class policies is very good. In large classes, for example, it is nearly impossible to complete introductions, along with other material, in a single class period.

I agree that you cannot over communicate with your students. Also if you are ill prepared it takes away your credibility as a instructor and you will loose their respect almost right away.
