Meeting a class for the first time

What other tips can you provide to an instructor meeting a class for the first time

Thanks for your input!! Having been a student some time ago, I feel that my classes lacked in this bonding. I will try this out and hope my students find the same enjoyment that I will!

I love having an ice breaker especially when the students and teachers are meeting each other for the very first time.

I did this and it seemed to work well. Not only does it help me learn the names of the students but also so they can get acquainted with each other

I teach demonstration style skills in software. I need to step back and carefully consider my audience and type/experience level of the learner each day. I edit presentations very often and assess what works and what is not essential.

Hi Sharlen,
I like your ideas. The birth dates ice breaker is great. I am sure the students have fun with it and get to know a lot more about each other quickly.

If possible, go around the group and have them introduce themselves. Then talk for a while, but be sure you get them to do something in groups before the class ends.

Hello, I agree, that it is so important to set the stage on the first day of class. The tone and culture of the class that is set that first day helps the group process get started.
Being prepared is so important. I keep a resource journal for myself where I keep a list of all activities (and paper copies of all handouts) and a check list of items that need to be accomplished. After each class, I go back over it and note changes that I can make in future classes.
One activity that I have used that helps students get to know one another is have them line up by birth dates. They need to communicate their birthdays through all nonverbal communication. This is a lot of fun! Sharlen

Hi Marie,
Be prepared!!!!!!! Have a well prepared syllabus and be clear in your mind about what your course expectations, requirements and policies are. Have an ice breaker or two that your students can do to get to know each other and have a bit of fun. If they can share a laugh with you that will help to settle your nerves and get them comfortable. Use the student introductions to start getting their names down while attaching a significant fact to each student. This will help you to remember their names. If possible have examples of work that will be completed during the course. This gives the students an idea of where they are going to be going in the coming weeks.
Take your time don't rush and before you know it the time will be gone and your students will be ready for the next class.
