Hi Louis,
Right you are. Clear expectations, requirements and polices greatly reduce the levels of frustrations and confusion on the part of students. This helps to get the course off to a good start and has the students focused on the course and how to be successful in it.
Gary
For me, this give the student or learner a clear map of what needs to be achieved in the lesson or lecture. Having a clear course requirement and having students/learners reiterate the comprehensive requirements give instructors the confidence that the material for class has been covered.
I do this all the time in class. I provide the learners, the requirements or objectives in the beginning of class and then ask that they repeat it back and then I ask any questions that they may have regarding the homework, online work, etc.
So I think it is very important to have clear comprehensive goals and clear course requirements so that learners are on the same page as everyone else and the instructor.
To avoid confusion, avert redundant questions, give the students a more concise idea of what will transpire in the class, and allow the students to prepare themselves better.
Hi Mike,
Right you are. So it is critical that instructors have well developed syllabi and course requirements. This will help the students to see what are the expectations, requirements and policies that they will be working with.
Gary
It is the single largest point students want to know. What is expected of me in this course.
A clear and concise description of course requirements is extremely important for several reasons. It breaks down the basics of the class for your students, helps you run the class, and allows everyone to share a certain understanding when it comes to future lessons.
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for sharing your policy on cell phones. This is a real challenge for all of us instructors. This information will be of help to beginning instructors as they set their own policies on cell phones in the classroom.
Gary
By giving clear and concise information about the course i think it sets the tone for how the course will be run. Also it will help the students understanding of the course or allow to ask questions if they do not before the class gets underway.
I am finding these discussions to be interesting because we all seem to have the same things going on in our classrooms and we also seem to arrive at some of the same solutions.
My policy on cell phones is that it is either off in your bag, or on silent or vibrate in your pocket. If I see it come out during the class you are excused for the day with loss of the daily points. They cannot be used for math problems in the class or on tests!
If you leave the class for a call, I have no problem as long as you do it quietly and without disturbing others. PAP
Hi Carroll,
This is why a well developed syllabus is so important. Expectations have to be clear and time lines for those expectations shared so both instructor and students are clear on what is going to happen over the course phase.
Gary
expectations are important, all students need to know what the course consists of and what is expected of them. It gives them a chance to prepare more thoroughly
