By introducing myself to the students, I let them know who I am, telling them briefly what I have done in the field, and to let them know that they can also be successful in the field. By having the students introduce themselves to me, I am able to match a name to a face, find out what background they have, and also to let them know that I am there for them as an instructor whenever I am needed.
Kelli,
The more interaction you can get with your students the better. Your approach enables the students to learn about each other and see how they can be a part of the learning process.

Jeff,
This is a good way to start the course off with everyone getting settled in and comfortable. This forms the foundation for developing and earning respect by both the students and instructor. From there it is a building process for the rest of the course.

Our first meeting begins like any formal introduction, but transpires into an informal discussion on how we all ended up in the same classroom. By sharing my trials and tribulations to the front of the classroom and their interest for this chosen profession,we begin our two year journey together as a new family. Each new course introduction the students are then asked very specific questions about themselves. Examples would be: married/single, birth month, favorite food etc. This seems to help connect the group and those students who do not necessarily talk to one another.
With an introduction of myself as the instructor i have the opportunity to; earn respect (of students) by sharing my experience and including how i have earned a living in this field.
I also will establish myself as the leader.
I can also make myslf appear “human" and at the same time share some of my hobbies.
With introductions of the students i have an opportunity to; learn the student names, associate a name with a face, and learn a litte of what brought the student to the class.
William,
A critical part of instructional planning for sure. The more we know about students the more accurately we can customize our instruction.

Beverly,
How do you learn this from your students? Do you have a discussion, they fill out cards or something else?

William,
This type of greeting and welcome goes a long way in getting the students settled into the course and feeling accepted.

Your learning about the student to personlize the class and to show your acesable.
To me the number one thing is learning what the student is expecting out the class.
I think it is important to make a first impresion to the students that we are all profesionals and by greeting with a smile and friendly hello, is a good way to put fears at ease on the first day of class.
Margaret,
I think it does as well. You are creating a supportive and comfortable environment for the students to learn and progress toward their career goals.

I feel this shows that I am interested in each student as an individual, I also want my students to be familiar with each other, for group work, study groups etc., and I feel by greeting each student this helps to make me more approachable.
I woukld like to first mention that I enjoyed this segment. I would like to report that the prepretory test is messed up and kept givingme confused reults. I had to take it three time and everytime it didn't function well. I scored 100% in the final test as you can see. Please check on the function of the prepretory flashcard and true\false teste . Sometrhing is wrong there.
Answering your question, when I introduce myself in class the students get to know who I cam and what my background is. How many years I have been teaching that all the other programs I teach for . It breaks the ice as I talk about that I likr to cook and will bring in my cooking experience whaile talking about textiles. They cheer in and tell me about their interests and golas and helps us all bong together, students with each other as they help each other during group activities and projects and they miss a class they have realted to each other already. students bonding with each other also helps in class discussions and propmts them to have a meaning ful conversation about the topic if they are at ease with each other and me.
By making introductions of both myself and the students I am insureing a more comfortable atmosphere suitable for learning.
Michelle,
Great triad of key components for successful teaching.

Annette,
This is a very comfortable low key approach to getting a new class off to a good start. Knowing that their instructor has the knowledge, experience and expertise to help them move their careers forward is very important in establishing rapport with students.

1)Building a rapport and "comfort zone between my students and I.
2)Showing that I value them as individuals and that I care about their education.
3)Create a famailiarity with their peers so that no one feels like a stranger.
On my first day of class, I introduced myself to my students and gave them a summarization of my background. This gave them a sense of ease to know that I, as their instructor, work in the profession that I am about to teach to them. Through my experiences as a professional, I am able and competent to prepare them to enter the field. They had a lot of "real life" questions for me, that I answered as best as I could. This helped me to get my students to trust that I was giving them a good education.
By mutual introductions, I learn why they are in this class and what type of position they are interested in after graduation. I make it a point to address details during class presentation that they will come across in the field. I also tell them how I use the lesson in the workplace.
