I know it sounds cliche, but you only get one chance to make that first impression. As I have said in some previous posts, you are the expert in the field as you step into the room. As you meet the student, meet them with confidence. The students can sense a lack of confidence, and it is only human nature to wonder why there is a lack there. If you have students that are concerned already, they will exploit the perceived issue. Be confident, and establish yourself early in the class. It will build student trust in you, and a confidence in the students that they have chosen the correct course and teacher for their goals.
Bliss,
Well said in terms of why the first impression is a snap shot of what is going to be how the course is going to operate and your position as the learning leader. It builds from there so the first impression needs to be a good one.

There are so many reason why we should make a positive first impression. We want the students to feel like they made the right decision in choosing the filed they have entered. We also want to show them that we are very well qualified for our job because we have so many years of experience and they will feel like they are in good hands.
Making a positive first impression is important for many reasons. It establishes trust and respect for the instructor and gives the students a clear vision on how the class will proceed.
Carmen,
Good way to establish a professional air about the class and let the students know they are being instructed by an educator that cares about them and their field.

The first day I dress professionally, I speak clearly, introduce myself and tell students my background experience that will make them accomplish their goal of success.
Angie,
Well said about needing to set the bar high and make an impression that reinforces it. This is the foundation upon which the rest of the course can be built and gets everyone on the same page in relation to understanding how the course is going to operate.

ANTHONY,
I wish you the best when you start your new course off with the additional information you have gained from the module. Since you have been teaching, even though it was a bit of a rocky start you have those experiences to combine with what you are learning and this is going to give you a great foundation for launching your next course.

Making a positive first impression is important on so many levels when starting a new class. Making a positive first impression like arriving before class begins, and being prepared for each class shows students that the instructor is prepared and this behavior should be modeled. This allows shows students what is expected of them. A first impression is very important and can determine how the class will be in the future. For those that are not prepared instructors they will likely see that from their students in the future. The first impression has the capability to set the bar high if done correctly.
Boy, I got to tell you in reading module 3 I can really see the error of my ways. After 40 year in the automotive field I took job as an automotive instructor and really got no training before I started my first class. What even made it worse I didn't get my first class assignment until 3 hours before my first class. As you know it was an uphill battle the whole course. I have been teaching for a while and I have definitely gotten better at what I do. Module 3 has given me the foundation to know how to meet the class for the first time, how to do a proper introduction ,overview and course requirements. I cant wait for the 3rd week in October when I start a new course, not only can I tell you that things will be different but they will also be done properly.
Nate,
Good point because we all can remember how we felt when we entered a new course and as a result structure our class opening to ensure that each student feels comfortable and supported in the class.

A positive first impression is very important because it sets a positive tone for the class, it gives you as an instructor the authority as the leader of the class and as an expert in your field.
A positive first impression also will show a level of respect that you as their instructor care about them and what they are learning and working toward in their college career.
If you establish a very good first impression, you will be seen by all students, not only your current class, as a professional who cares about their learning and their success.

Remembering how you felt on your first day of a class and how you would want to be greeted. Building that trust from the start will go a long way towards a great course to come. It also makes you as the instructor less nervous.
Joshua Justin,
So true. This is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built. So we need to make sure it is a good and supportive one from the very first meeting forward.

Making a positive first impression is very important because it sets the mood for a great course between the student as well as the instructor.
William,
This is the way to provide a solid foundation for your students upon which the rest of the course will be built. This is the start of developing rapport with the students and their career growth.

The first day making a good impression is very important. When speaking to the class and telling them about the course, be positive. Let the students know your goal for the course. It is important to get off on the right foot. Let the students know where and how they can get hold of you. Be positive, and let the students know you can be approached at anytime. Be positive.

It is so important to get off on a positive note. The first day is the time to shine. Introduce yourself and explain who you are, the students who you are and what you except from the course. It is important to be positive and let the students get to know you.The first day is important.
Robert,
This has been my experience as well. This is why I talk with my new instructors to make sure they understand how important it is to be a role model in dress, language, conduct and respect. Respect is a two way street and must be earned by both parties. A professional persona goes a long way in helping to advance the earning of respect.
