New students

How do you deal with student who is to nervous to partner up with another student.

Hi Dorothy,
Thank you for sharing this example of how you handled a situation where a student was in the position of not completing the course if something wasn't done. The tutoring gave her someone to learn from and be supported by. The end result was success for the student so she could continue on her career path and that is the goal of the program.

I once had a student who was very uncomfortable with any sort of math work, which became a problem during the costing section in our Plated Desserts class. She was extremely embarassed about her lack of understanding of the subject, and very hesitant to seek out help. I explained to her the importance of overcoming uncomfortable situations in order to further her own knowledge base and ultimately, her career. This seemed to put things in perspective, and when I suggested another student as a tutor, she was very open to it. Just realizing her career might be in jeopardy didn't necessarily make her more comfortable with other students, but it made her more willing to be challenged in order to grow.

Hi Laura,
This is an unusual situation. I would try to pair the student with an experienced and more senior student if at all possible. Once the nervous student has had experience with such a student they will be more comfortable working in a partner setting. Give the nervous student a task with a high success factor to do while working with the other student to show how success can come from working with a partner.
Not sure if this answers your question fully since I am working with limited information but if you have any further questions please let me know.
