First day of class.
I was really nervous for my first day of class. I opened with an ice breaker. It was a good way for the students to get to know me, me know them, and also let them it is okay to free speak in class. Just being really prepared for class helped. I had an outline of what we need to go over and the order to keep me on track. I found this really helpful especially if you get nervous easily.
Funny, But good idea to weed them out early if needed
I come from behind the desk a walk up front and close to the students as I introduce the class.
Having students introduce themselves and a brief background description helps.
I teach surgical technology, so I like to find the bloodiest, most invasive surgery I can find to show them on the first day. Most of the student's love it, and those who don't may need to re-evaluate if this is going to be their field of choice.
The first day of class I have noticed that talking with enthusiasm is a great way to help student become more relaxed. Sitting in front of the class and telling students who you are with a monotone voice and just handing out paper work makes the classes seem dreary for the students.
First day of class is important because that will be the impression you leave the students in their memory for a long time to come. It is always important to be prepared and not be nervous.
Hi Oliver,
The one I use and the students really like is a very simple one. I have each student fold a 8x11 sheet of paper into an airplane. Then I line up the students on one end of the classroom. I have each one fly their airplane and note where it lands. They generally go a only a few feet with the exception of two or three students whose planes fly across the classroom. I then have an equal number of students whose planes did not fly well go with each student whose planes when a long ways. The students with the long flying planes then coach their group of students on how to construct paper airplanes. Then I have each student fly their new plane. As a result of the coaching it never fails that the students will increase by 4 to 5 times the length of flight of their planes. Then I explain to them the value of watching, helping and learning throughout the course because they can see the physical evidence of success by observing the pile of planes laying at the other end of the room. Simple but graphic chance to show how learning and performance can improve with input and support. Hope this works for you. Let me know what results you get.

What icebreaker did you use? I teach game design so I usually ask my students what type of game are they currently into.
Hi Jessica,
Thank you for sharing how you were able to have a successful opening of class. I am a big fan of ice breakers. They really help to get the students settled into the course and it gives you as you said a chance to get over a case of the nerves. Good advice for beginning instructors.
