i agree that by providing some background about your experience shows students that they can do what the teacher has done to be successful instructors. i share with them how i went to school while raising a family gives students the confidence that they can do it too.

I used this tactic when first meeting the students, briefly overcapping the steps that I took to advance in my career. I think they found it very interesting! We connected on a level of respect and understanding--that I realize they are working hard and going to school, juggling many responsibilities---but I too did the same. I motivated them with encouragement for the avenues that would open up from their hard work, and told them I would be there for them to help guide them through the course! Its a win-win for both of us!

My motivation is showing the students by example of my professional achievements and those of many of my nurse friends. The fact that they will have a job that is in demand and the various fields within nursing is a high attractant to those entering the field. By showing and being a mentor and model is also a motivator for these students.
