All good points on how to set the tone for the course and get the students ready for the coming content. If you are excited and prepared the students will follow your lead in getting themselves ready to learn.

I truly feel that the very first class sets the tone for the rest of the quarter. I find that by being on time and setting the example for my students, I show them what I expect and not just tell them. I try my best to be upbeat and show my passion for the subject I am teaching--I want my students to be excited to learn, and they won't be if I am not excited to teach...
