First impression can motivate
I found that for some students first impression can really motive them when going over the sllybus especially if games are involved but,you still have to deal with negative adgitators theirs always one, which starts another student.(adults)I know Some students that do this can be unhappy and wants someone eles to be unhappy with them ( misery love company )how do you nip this in the bud before it get rooted and still give a great first impression .
I agree. When you initially meet and interact with students, the students are basically sizing you up and forming an initial impression. It is important to connect with the students while sharing perspective about the course and the material that will be covered in the course. It is important to explain the value and your ability to convey the material in a practical and academic context to provide value to the student academically and professionally.
Hi Yvonne,
My first step is to talk with the student privately and try and find out what the problem is. Generally it is something involving student aid, or the front office that is making them upset with the entire school. I have found that by me taking a personal interest in their situation, meaning their anger or outburst in class, they calm down and settle into the class. If they don't then I refer them to the student services office. I have removed students because I will not allow them to upset or disrupt the learning of the other students. Also, if I let them continue I will have lost control of the class and that cannot happen.
I also try to separate their anger about the school from my class so they will perform and succeed in my class even though they may not be happy with the school. This seems to work very well also. Creates a refuge for them while in my class. Note, though I do not side with them nor badmouth the school. If an instructor does this then they are in a position where the student can leverage this to their advantage and cause even more problems for the instructor.
