Putting together a great test

When putting together a test do you generally like to inlcude an essay?

Generally I teach acounting and instead of an essay I like to use a comprehensive problem that requires all of skills we have covered in the course.

Hi Jennifer,
This all depends on the course I am teaching and where I am at in the course. If the course is more technical in base I generally will not do any essay questions at all. If the course is more in the problem solving or case study area of decision making I start using more essay questions as we progress through the course since their skills are developing and I want to see how they can express their newly acquired knowledge in essay form.

Hi Jennifer,

Great question! For me, it depends on the topic and subject matter. In some instances, I can determine whether or not the students have grasped the material by utilizing multiple choice or fill in the blank answers. I generally include essay questions when I want to make sure students understand a complete concept or process.
