Syllabus
I use my syllabus as a guide and include a class calendar so my students have a clear picture of goals and assignment due dates.
I never thought of using a class calendar, what a great idea. My syllabus is usually an overview, so to have assignment due dates would definitely help in my class. Thanks!
That's great information. It's true knowing that there are paperwork or test comming up that gets the student a better chance to prepare themselfs.
Hi Stephen,
What other strategies have you used to help the students to get settled into your course and feeling comfortable.
Gary
By following the course syllabus and the course outline, the students can feel comfortable achieving the expectations of the course.
Hi Bethany,
A well prepared and informative syllabus will do a lot in reducing student concerns and getting them on the right track for the course. As you say though you have to repeat many times over due dates and specifics about assignments if they are going to get them completed on time.
Can you imagine what instructors face if they don't have a well prepared syllabus? They are in for a very long course even if it only meets for 12 weeks.

I have found having all assignment due dates, exam dates and field trip information on the syllabus on the first day helps to give students the tools to better navigate the semester. Proving this information later in the semester tends to confuse the students, especially if they happen to miss a class. I have also found I need to restate what is on the syllabus in class as well, to keep all students on track.
Hi David,
I agree with the use of the calendar. It really helps to keep the students focused on what is going to happen in the next class as well as reminding them of up coming due dates for projects.

I'm going to keep your thoughts in mind, Steve, regarding a "road maps and compasses" when developing future syllabi. Thanks. Lora
I like the idea of including a weekly calendar in the syllabus. I think it gives the student a sense of pace in the course, and goals if they choose to read ahead in the textbook.
I agree the syllabus should have the feeling of a compass or road map, directing students on their path in the class.
Hi Rachel,
Good plan. This is so important for keeping the class organized and moving forward. By knowing the course expectations, requirements and polices the students know how to settle themselves into the course and be successful.
