Student Empowerment

One method of starting a class is to ask the students how they would like to proceed. This does not mean that they take control. They should be given choices that are appropriate.

The instructor can let the students know what should be done but allow the students to participate in the decision as to how the sequence shouls be.

This empowers the students.

I like to do a little TPI exercise called H.A.B.E.S after I finish with it I tell the students what is expected of them. I then ask the students what they expect from me. This way they know they have rights as students and gives them a sence of empowerment.

Hi Wes,
Good point. Each student deserves the opportunity to be successful and the instructor needs to plan so that this can happen on a consistent basis.

At the start of the class the instructor can state what will be covered in the course. When it comes to class participation/projects a couple of options can be presented and the students can select how they would like to proceed. This would get them involved as well as give them a sense of empowerment. The instructor would still be steering the class.

If you are working in a regimented, structured ciriculum, this could lead to distater. Empower them to make decisions that impact their individual outcomes, but not at the expense of the remainder of the class.
