First day class

how make first imprssion?

Hi Elinda,
You have a very good approach to how you are going to start your new classes. Your students are informed as to what is going to occur in the course and then have the opportunity to get to know each other as they introduce themselves. Anything you can do to reduce student anxiety and frustration will help with class management and you are doing that with your Q&A session and discussion.

I think first impressions are very important in all aspects of life especially on the first day of class. We should always be well-groomed and punctual. How can I expect my class to be on time if I'm late. Being neat in attire and on time in class starts the students off on the right foot for their career. I like to tell my students about my career as a court reporter as well as my journey through court reporting school. It helps them to relate to me as an instructor. I've gone through what they are now going through. I understand all their fears and frustrations. They know I've been there. This can help them open up to me more and be more comfortable with me as an instructor. I want their first impression of me to be a respectful one. I want them to feel they have the right instructor for the job and they are going to learn evrything they need to know from me. I'm speaking to them from experience. This will also open up a question and answer session about the world of court reporting. I also like all the students to introduce themselves and tell their classmates what got them interested in court reporting. It helps break the ice for all of us.

Being attentive to each -- eye contact if possible -- and a genuine and passionate attitute about the choices the students have made to be there goes a long way to settling any uneasiness, for both student and instructor. Also allowing questions from students has been a great icebreaker for initial classes, as well as new students joining an ongoing class.

Hi Shawnie,
Great way to start a class and get everyone comfortable with what is going to occur in the coming class sessions.

Greet each student personally w/a smile and a handshake welcoming them to class. Be dressed comfortably and emit an "at ease" feeling throughout the class. Be at ease yourself and students will be at ease and more apt to learn.

Hi Fiseha,
Be well groomed, on time, well prepared and organized. Greet each student and have an ice breaker to start the class. This will get you off to a good start with your students.
