Meeting the Class for the First Time
I like to introduce myself, tell a little about my teaching experience, work experience, etc. then I call the roll. I give the students an index card where they put their full name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and any information they want me to know. I give them a second card where they tell me what name they want to be called. Then we go around the room in radom order and each student introduces themselves to the class. Then I hand a game search of questions so they can get to know one another. This really helps the students get to know one another.
I like the idea of the students partner introducing them. It would bring an instant understanding of who your classmate is. Great idea!! Thanks :)
Hi Alina,
This is a comfortable and engaging way to start a new class. The students get to interact with each other, learn more about their classmates and get settled into the course.

I begin the course in much of the same way. Like yourself, I give a little bit of background on my education and teaching experience before calling roll. I use the 3X5 card for their names, which I have on hand throughout the course to call on students at random so that they do not feel I am picking on certain people.
On the first day, after I have introduced myself I ask them to partner up with the person sitting next t them and to introduce themselves, sharing 3 things about themselves with the partner. However, one of those three facts must be a lie and the partner must guess which are the truths and which the lie. Then, they each introduce each other to the class by name and one interesting fact about their partners. It helps to break the ice and to help students get to know each other.
Hi Mary Jane,
Good way to get to know your students while establishing your own position in the classroom. This is a comfortable way to get to know everyone and they others. This sets the stage for the building of interaction for the remainder of the course.
