Meeting the class for the first time
In meeting the class for the first time I find it helpful to introduce myself, give contact information and review the syllabus. Also it is helpful to call the roster to put names with faces.
Gwendolyn, gauging student participation is most important and especially for the assessment of how to deliver content and promote engagement for an enriching learning experience. Not every class session will be extremely hyped; however, for most every session where there is an opportunity to engage students defined expectations give students a heads up. Thus, as an instructor this part of class is not long and drawn out.
It is very important to be prepare to see first day your class, i prefer a small class because it is allow me to give each student individual attention

Good way to get everyone familiar with each other while setting the stage for a successful course. This way the students know a little about each other and how the course is going to operate.

When meeting my class for the first time I also like to define my expectations for student participation.

Good way to start a class and get everyone involved. They do like these kinds of ice breakers because they help the students to get settled in the class and to know other students.

I agree with that as well as when meeting my class for the first time I also like them to give me one word that best describes them, it seems to help break the ice a bit more.
