meeting the class
engage the students on the first day. First impressions mean the most
Hi Janice,
This is a good way to open up a new class. You are creating an identification with them by relaying your own experiences as a student. It is a growth effort after the first class on the part of your students and yourself. By the way, after teaching for over 30 years I still am nervous when starting a new class. I think this is a good think because it means that an instructor still wants to do a good job with the class no matter how many times that person has taught the class.

I am always extremely nervous when I meet a new class. I don't know why, it always works out well, but for some reason, walking into the unknown is an intimidating experience. I know my students feel the same way. Especially since some of them are returning to school 10, 20 or 30 years after graduating high school. When I introduce myself to the students, I explain to them that a few years ago, I was in their shoes - I let them know it was hard for me too. I think by letting the students see I am human too, it helps them understand we are all in this together. It levels the playing field - which not only puts them at ease, but helps my nerves as well. It helps the students to connect to me, which in turn helps them to open their minds regarding the subject we are about to learn.
Hi Cory,
Good point. It all begins with how the students are introduced to the course and if they have a good impression of it, it will only build from there.
