I let my class know what I expect from them and the class itself. I also have them write down what they expect from me as well as what they expect to get out of the class. I want reasonable expectations. I like to do an open discussion with these expectaions. It gets them all involved and its a tool to get to know them as well.

my first day of class i give each student a copy of my expectations out of the class and at the end of class i give my first pop quiz and they have to list 5 expectations that i expect and gives then an idea of how my class works and that everything we discuss is important one way or another
