I like these strategies. They are student centered and really get the message across about the course content.

My favorite ways to motivate students are to find ways to bring the text-book to life through guest speakers and field trips. With one class, I had each student pick a chapter of the textbook; discuss it in class for 30 minutes, then they chose a field trip location for us, and told us how it related to the readings. We still talk about that class, the field trips, and the learning that far exceeded any of our expectations.
