Self introduction

It is important for the instructor to introduce herself to the students.

April,
I agree. You are modeling your expectations and this is a great way to set the standard for the course.

I teach public speaking/oral communications so I feel very strongly about the introduction of myself. I have an expectation of my students and I give them an example of that while doing my own introduction. I want them to be able to use visual aides during their speeches so I use a power point presentation during my self-introduction. Not only does them give them the opportunity to get to know me but it shows them that I can do what I expect them to be able to do. I think a demonstrative type introduction can be very useful if you have time for it.

Introducing yourself to your students also allows them to see that you are a person as well. Most of them don't look at you like a person, but as an authoratative figure. This breaks the ice nicely.

I agree. On the first day I introduce myself to the class as an ice breaker and I have the students introduce themselves as well. I also express the importance of communication with the students. I want them to feel comfortable when coming to me if or when they have a difficult time uderstanding a subject matter.

Yes I believe the instructor should identify his/herself to the students the first day of class. I also think that writing it on the board along with the title of the class, and the name as well as the date. This way the students know who the instructor is and which class they are attending.

Hi Mitali,
Good suggestions. Thanks for sharing them with other instructors.

I feel that the introduction sets the tone for the class. It allows me to display my positive spirit, and opens the door for the students to release theirs anxieties about the class.

Yes, it is. However, the introduction should be brief emphasizing more on the expertise of the subject and any sharing career experiences. Students need to feel secure that they are being taught by someone who knows the subject matter and is professional. Also, during the introduction a little about ones' hobbies can be mentioned to help build a rapport between the students and the instructor, this also helps in establishing an environment of ease and comfort for learning.
