First impression

It is very important to make that first impression a good one. Students are nervous, they look for a leader, a knowledgeble instructor, a mentor and some look to challenge the instructors from day one. It is wise to show students that you have their best interest at heart and that you are proficient in what you do.

Terry,
It really does. It is the basis for earning the respect of your students while you are establishing rapport with them.

This is so true. A good first impression can help to create a positive learning outcome of the course. I believe it sets the standard of what is to be expected by all.

Students are nervous, but many are returning. As a new instructor in the civilian world, coming from military, I was able to adapt quickly. Though I was still nervous. I think being confident in front of students, yet slow to start with the material lets them see you are also confident in your teaching.

Melissa,
So true. A positive first impression helps to get the students settled into the course and ready to learn. A negative impression creates a tense environment for everyone.
