First day jitters
I am a new instructor this year and even though I have taught for almost a year I still get that nervousness because I have new students every term. I hope that they welcome me as my past students have. I give a very detailed syllabus and we go over everything so we have an understanding.
By the end of the class I am usually calm and know how my students are going to be.
Anthony,
Good way to show students that you respect them and their presence in the class. Knowing their names shows effort on your part.

I even after 9 years of teaching I too can have first day jitters. what I do to get over them is to get the names correct on the rool sheet. This at least lest the student know I care about there name
Jessica,
Approach the class room with confidence because you have expertise in your field or you wouldn't be the instructor. I know this may seem easier said than done but practice confidence anyway. Next be firm and consistent with your management of the class. Students test new instructors to see if they can identify ways to disrupt the class or avoid completing work. Don't let that happen and you will see your control of the class expanding very quickly.

I am also new this year and have only been teaching for about 4 weeks. Does anyone have advice on how to handle students who know you are new and test their limits?
