Instructor introduction

How much time would you recommend for instructor introduction? A more experienced instructor would take more time than someone who had less experience

Allen,
I really enjoy starting off a new class as well. The introductions and the ice breakers I use help to get them settled in and feeling good about the course. The sets the stage for a successful course to come.

I don't think you can set a time for an introduction but the students generaly want to know what your experiences consists of.
I really have fun with the class on this segment
as they want to compare you to other instructors.

Lance,
Also, by knowing your students better you are setting the stage for the development of rapport. Rapport is an essential component of learning success.

I like this thought. I try to be concise in my experience and like you said let them learn throughout the course. Besides that it is good for the students to get to know one another and for me to get the time to learn ablout them.

I like your approach and think I will use it when I start my first class in a few weeks, Thanks

Charlene,
You have the right approach. I am like you in that I share enough for the students to see I am qualified but spend the bulk of my time having them share information about themselves. This gets the class off to a good start and they see that I am interested in them and what life experiences they bring to the classroom.

I try and give a brief overview of my professional experiences that relate to the course of study. I don't like to spend a lot of class time on "me", I want to get to know my students and what their overall career goal is so I can help them achieve that goal. I would like to think I give enough information about myself in the beginning to give the students an idea of my expertise. I believe that much of that comes out as the course progresses.

Glenn,
I like to start my first class meeting with student introductions. Depending on how many students there are in the class this may take some time so I try to "read" how my students are doing in terms of attention and engagement and this lets me know how much I share about myself. Generally I give a few highlights (approximately 5 minutes) and then add to that with more specifics if the students are engaged in what I am sharing. If not I give them a break and then share more about my experience at different times in the course.
