First Class and First Impressions

As an adjunct instructor whether it be online or in a traditional classroom setting, it is imperative to provide students with a positive first impression. If a student's first impression of you is positive, you established the necessary credibility to move forward in the student - instructor relationship. However, if a student's first impression is a negative one, it will be very difficult to earn the student's trust.

Suzanne Summers stated that "It's not what you wear, it's how you present yourself that determines what your first impression will be."

Cheryl,
So true in terms of getting students engaged. They like these types of activities and gets them to working with each other. In addition, they are fun to do so this sets the tone for a positive learning environment.

Enthusiasm is key, as is team-building. I do at least 1 team-building exercise on the first day. When the class collaborates together on the first day, they feel more at ease.

You should always show enthusiam for the subject at hand. If you can't or aren't excited about it, you can't expect your students to be either.

Alicia,
You are so right about needing to bring a positive attitude to each class. We have to "sell" our content each time we teach and when our students are really engaged to results are so rewarding for everyone.

"checking" my day...or morning at the door works wonders for me. If I'm feeling, "blah" I leave it in the car. In a class instructing adults...it's very noticeable if I am not positive.

David,
Good points and good quote about first impressions.
