meeting class first time

with my past experienced having started new classes helped me by preparing my objective for the class for example: my time table how long per chapter, break time, quiz, question and answer or any lab groups.
with this class i have learned more technique to use in the future.

Charlene,
Sharing like this helps to reflect the human side of you as the instructor. This sharing also starts the development of respect by the students.

This idea looks like a really good idea for the students and I think it would be good for the instructor as well. I know from the little teaching experience I've had, that students are always curious about you, too!

Jeff,
This is a fun and comfortable ice breaker that I know will be of value to many other instructors. Thank you for sharing it with us.

On the first day of class, I have students go through the following steps for introductions:
1. Name
2. Where they are from
3. Career goals
4. Any professional experience (related to major or not).
5. Something unique about themselves
6. Top 3 items (music/apps) on their phone/mp3 player.

This approach gets students to open up about themselves, especially the something unique question.

Just a comment, In the videos prior to the module, An associate Proffessor stated that she "never wants to hear a student express what he learned last night and bring it up for discussion the next class" A lot of students dont process the same way (we older ones) and maybe the Light came on ! and has something profound to do with that discussion. I think she might be missing out on something she just might not know by not wanting to hear it a day later. Thoughts ?

Nicole,
This is a good way to start the development of mutual respect for each other and lays the foundation for rapport. Also, you get to share with your students in a way that shows them that you were a former student yourself and that you understand what they are going through as they work their way through their career preparation.

During my first class I like to tell the students where I have come from, my experiance and path this far to get to where I am today. I find that if the students know that I know what it is like to start out where they are and that I got to where I am now, that they can see hope for their own future. I also give lots of tips on how to manage their time and how to succeed through out their educational experiance.

ELIZABETH,
You have a solid foundation upon which to do your instructional planning. Keep up the good work.
